Are You Guilty of These 3 Common Flossing Mistakes?

Woman Flossing | Hagan Dentistry

If you’re like many people, you know flossing should be part of your daily oral hygiene routine but actually doing it can be a chore. You may be tempted to rush through the routine to get it over with, which results in an inadequate job and a waste of your effort.

Why You Need to Floss

Let’s start by saying that, yes, flossing is essential even if you brush your teeth like a pro. Floss reaches into the crevices between teeth that your toothbrush can’t and carries away bacteria-filled plaque that threaten your oral health.

3 Common Flossing Mistakes

Flossing isn’t complicated, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Since your family dentist in Kingsport, TN wants you to enjoy the best possible oral health, here are the common mistakes we all tend to make when flossing.

Not Cleaning the Teeth on Both Sides

If you get your brush between your teeth and just move it up and down, you’re not getting both teeth clean. Instead, wrap the floss in a “C” shape and clean the tooth on one side, then move it to the other side and clean it.

Forcing Floss between Teeth

If the floss doesn’t slide easily between teeth, don’t force it because it can snap against your gums and cause damage. Try sawing back and forth with the floss to gradually work it between teeth. If you still have difficulty, talk to your hygienist about floss threaders or other options.

Using the Same Length of Floss

If you reuse the same length of floss, you just transfer bacteria-filled plaque from one tooth to the next. Floss is inexpensive, so use all you need to do the job properly.
